Heat exhaustion is caused by a loss of fluids and salt from sweating and decreased blood flow to the brain and other vital organs. Symptoms include excessive sweating, clammy skin, weakness, nausea, headache and dizziness. Victims can become confused, vomit and lose consciousness.
Heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency caused by a complete failure of the body’s heat regulation. Symptoms include lack of perspiration, mottled skin, dry skin, oral temperature of 105 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, confusion, anger, or delirium, chills, nausea, unconsciousness, convulsions, and eventually a coma.
For victims, get medical attention immediately. Cool the body by sponging with cold water, immersing in cold water, or covering with cold compresses. Continue this treatment until an ambulance arrives.
