Festival is a winner
With a beautiful, breezy July day, plenty of food and abundant crowds, Chief Roach pronounced the day-long festival of crafts, games, rides and community spirit a success. “It was a fantastic turnout,” he said, estimating that between 15,000 and 20,000 people had visited the town during the day.
“They came early and stayed late,” Chief Roach said. People were buying hamburgers and hot dogs on their way out after the fireworks. -
Mr. Thomasson said that people had begun to arrive on Gay St. even before the 10 a.m. starting time. “During the day it was steady, with a good flow and turnover. It was fun. I think we had far more people for the fireworks than ever in my memory,” he added.
“It rang the bell,” said Washington’s Mayor Dean Morehouse. “Let Freedom Ring was a good theme. I hope everybody enjoyed it.”
Chief Roach, tired but still elated by the event’s success, was already planning ahead. ‘We’ve got a great bunch of volunteers ... All I can say is ‘Next year, watch out!’.”
