three holes had been dug: “In two, they got nothing but dirt and in one, they hit rock at six feet.” There appear to be two ridges of rock running through the area designated for Phase I of the landfill, Mr. McCarthy reported.
“There’s plenty of dirt on that site . . . (The rock) is not going to limit what we can do with the site at all. It’s not going to amount to greatly inflated costs. It’s not going to involve blasting,” he said, adding that the supervisors already have ruled out rock removal with explosives.
“This really puts down the geotechnic study,” interjected Mrs. Early, referring to the site study and evaluation which the committee has criticised repeatedly as incomplete and incorrect.
“I don’t think so,” maintained Supervisor Nelson Lane, who studied geology and worked in the field be-, fore moving to Rappahannock County. “It happens everywhere," he said, adding that a boring just five feet away from the rock would not have detected its presence.
“The rock’s a problem — a msgor problem — but I think it’s a problem^ we can work out without it costing the county too much more money,” said Supervisor Mike Massie.
