With wisdom and foresight our state legislators, by a fair majority, passed a state-wide referendum on horse racing. This has been approved by Gov. Gerald L. Baliles and the opportunity to choose will be on your voting ballot on Nov. 8. The vote will allow localities, in turn, to each decide whether to allow or not to allow a track. Please give this your best consideration and vote yes for horse racing. «
Racing has been endorses by the Virginia Horse Council which represents horse owners and 25 breed, show and sport organizations in all areas of the state.
Most horse owners are average citizens. Around 80 percent of all horses are owned by families interested in small business investments and recreation. Forty percent of the horses are owned or ridden by youth. Our youth are interested in horse careers, and we need to provide jobs to keep them in our state.
Like all major businesses, the capital investment for large farms is necessary and these farms provide a basic, vital and highly desirable industry in our state. Virginia should recruit and nurture these farms in a way similar to the state’s major efforts to attract other industries. Our
