Health bill too costly ;
The catastrophic illness bill recently passed by the House, anil
passed by the Senate last week, i| now on the President’s desk for si* nature. t
I voted against the conference report on this bill, H.R. 2470, lapcause it extracts too high a price from the elderly in terms of increased Medicare premiums and increased income taxes and yet it will not deal with the severe problems facing the elderly in terms of health care.
Namely, this bill would increase income taxes on the elderly by a maximum of $800 in the next year alone, but it does not even deal with the financing of nursing home care or the weak financial condition of our Medicare program.
I believe Congress has missed a tremendous opportunity to legislate a sound, needed, and responsible health care policy for our nation’s elderly.
