communication breaks down entirely. Then, nothing is accomplished and often the individuals end up disliking each other — and blaming each other for their lack of success.

The problem reminds me of a young child throwing a temper tantrum in an attempt to get its way. Unfortunately, it is not just young children who throw temper tantrums. Although an adult’s behavior might be more sophisticated, when the veneer is stripped away it is still a temper tantrum.

The best approach to an individual throwing a tantrum — whatever their age — is not to react with a tantrum of your own. Perhaps if the behavior is seen in its true light, as a manifestation of emotional immaturity, we can be more patient in helping the other person to grow.
