Racing is a popular and a closely regulated sport. Around us, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, Kentucky and now Tennessee allow racing. North Carolina is working to allow racing. There’s a daily dollar drain as busloads of our citizens go to these states from all areas of Virginia. Our newspapers run ads for these tracks, and magazines promote horse racing as a major tourist attraction in other states. The world recognizes Kentucky and its horses - an industry we gave away and one that we should regain.
Race horses are well cared for athletes and racing is an exciting sport that we, like most everyone else, should be able to enjoy and profit from. More than 1,000 of our Virginia-owned horses race outside our state. We need to bring our horses home.
Racing will not cause any more problems than any other major industry or large public sports gathering. The regulatory costs are minute by comparison to benefits.
