Labeling Sperryville as “one
of the very few such villages remaining in the Commonwealth,” the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission has listed the entire town in its historic districts register. The commission’s undated release said that Sperryville has been virtually unchanged since the 1920s. The commission singled out the architecture of Sperryville for particular mention: “Intermingled with the village’s vernacular architecture of the settlement period are postbellum houses built under the influence of the picturesque styles of the 19th century Romantic Revivals, as well as a diverse collection of workers’ housing along the Thornton River and on Routes 522 and 1001.”
