Sperryville's fall festival
Fall festival on Oct. 7 and 8 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. There will be Victorian carriage rides, games for children, crafts galore, basketweaving demonstrations, apple butter boiling, catalog closeouts, antiques, apples and fun of all sorts. “Plan to come to Sperryville, spend the day and enjoy the festival,” said organizers. Live theatre at Gay St.
Live theatre will return to Rappahannock County this fall in the form of James Goldman’s “The Lion in Winter.” The story takes place at Christmas time 1183 and involves, among many other things, personal and power conflicts within the Plantagenet family. The Plantagenets, one of the most powerful families in the history of the western world, are headed in the play by Henry II, great grandson of William the Conqueror. The play, co-sponsored by RAAC and the Rappahannock Players, is being directed by Michelene Hostetter. Performances are scheduled for Sept. 29 and 30 and Oct. 6 and 7 and will take place at the Gay St. Theater.
Workshop on grief
“Working Through Grief,” a class for the bereaved, will be offered for six weeks beginning Tuesday, Oct. 3 in the morning. Hospice of the Rapidan will sponsor this at its Culpeper Office. For an enrollment application, call (703) 825-4840.
Free safety clinic
J. A. Swan Company in Culpeper and the Mid-Atlantic Stihl Chain Saw Distributor will present a chain saw Safety Clinic on Thursday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. at Swan’s store, 201 South East Street in Culpeper. Mike Pretty, factory representative for Stihl Chain Saws will discuss and demonstrate safe chain saw operation and will demonstrate the different types and methods of chain saw cutting. He will present valuable safety tips for operating various types of chain saws as well as Stihl saw. The class will be conducted informally and all are invited. There will be no charge nor obligation .
Performing arts workshops
The Golden Key will sponsor two workshops in the performing arts for children. The first will be geared toward teenagers, and will focus on practice for dance, drama and storytelling. Another will emphasize creative movement and storytelling for children ages 7-12, and use singing, movement and theatre games to learn the art of performance. Both will be taught by Catherine Kiley at the Town Hall in Washington. The cost for eight sessions, each Monday through Nov. 13, is $50. For more information call Ms. Kiley (987-3106).
Fire prevention day
In conjunction with Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 8-14, the Rappahannock County Fire and Rescue Association is sponsoring a Fire Prevention Day at the high school on Saturday, Oct. 7 from 1-4 p.m. There will be displays of fire equipment and apparatus, demonstrations of equipment, and the Pegasus med-evac helicopter from the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville will be on display as well (assuming that it is not needed for an emergency call). Free blood pressure checks will be available, along with brochures and other information about fire safety. There will be trained fire personnel available to answer questions, and free balloons and hats for all children. There will also be hot dogs, drinks and baked goods available. The public is invited to attend and learn more about this important topic.
Story workshop Oct. 14,15
Julie Portman, artistic director of the Golden Key Performance Group, will lead a weekend workshop in storytelling for adults who want to tell and listen and create with stories. The workshop will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 14 and 15 at the Town Hall in Washington. It will focus on story as a language common to everyone and as a key to creativity. In the workshop, visual art, poetry, traditional and personal stories will be used as a source of inspiration. Participants will also work in small groups creating and sharing stories together.
