Today, 45 of these districts exist in the State of Virginia. They enlist and coordinate help from public and private sources to get the job of conservation done. Districts receive funds from local and state governments and technical assistance from state and federal agencies. Districts cover 94 counties, 14 cities and 98.5 percent of the land base in Virginia.
Not many people realize that the Culpeper SWCD was directly responsible for the existence of the two watershed projects located in Madison and Culpeper counties. Beautiful Run and Mountain Run came into existence because of the Soil and Water Conservation District’s efforts.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been distributed to the landowners in the five counties over the years from the Chesapeake Bay Cost Share Program through the conservation district.
Virtually hundreds of erosion and sediment control plans have either been reviewed or approved by the conservation district throughout all five counties.
