I’m glad Mr. Coleman has seen the light. But at least Mr. Coleman had the courage to admit, even obliquely, that he made a mistake. Mr. Quayle never really did that — he turned the allegation on its head and intimated that criticism of his service record was an attack on the patriotism of everyone who served in the National Guard.
I, for one, wish that Mr. Quayle had admitted his error. He could have diffused the entire episode with a simple statement that, as a younger man, he had made decisions which he regretted later. I can certainly identify with that. I wish a had a dollar for every one I’ve made.
But, no, he couldn’t do that. Well, it was his loss.
