addition to the fall and winter dining table. This feature of the third weekend in October in historic Washington has become increasingly popular over the past thirty two years; those interested in dried flower arrangements are advised to come early.
The other attraction for the weekend is the tour of three Rappahannock County homes which are chosen for their historical or architectural interest. This year two older homes and one contemporary are featured.
On the south side of U.S. 211, one mile west of Washington, is Greenfield, the home of Ted and Renate Chapman. Its origins go back to a June 1735 grant by Lord Fairfax to Francis Browhing. Greenfield burned down and was rebuilt in LS20 by Willis Browning.
The Brownings were famous for their hospitality and invitations to the dances, dinners and other entertainment were much sought after throughout the area. Their guests during the Civil War included General Butler of South Carolina and the well-known Colonel John S. Mosby, of Mosby’s Raiders fame, with whom Ted Chapman’s great-grandfather rode.
