In my opinion, this undermines the role and responsibility of parents. In this case it doesn’t matter whether you are pro-choice or prolife. The issue is the role of the parents and how state law undermines parents.
Over the last several years, there has been an effort to require that parents be notified before an unwed schoolgirl receives an abortion.
The candidates for governor have opposite positions on this issue. Douglas Wilder has voted against parental notification. Marshall Coleman has stated that he supports parental notification.
This may not be the biggest issue in the election campaign. But it is important to me. I think it says something important about how the candidates feel about the role of government in family life.
