To the editor:
I was one of about 40 Rappahannock citizens who spent the last year preparing a curriculum for the public schools’ Family Life Education Program.
The majority of people believe it is the parents’ responsibility to teach values to their children. Our schools can work with parents to reinforce values of behavior and conduct. Ultimately, this is a parental responsibility.
Unfortunately, Virginia law undermines the role of the parents in many areas.
Here’s an example. Suppose that an unmarried, school-aged girl believes she is pregnant. She goes to the county health department without her parents, finds out that she is pregnant, and decides to have an abortion.
The county nurse is prohibited by law from telling the child’s parents about the abortion.
