On a scale in which 50 is considered the national average first graders scored 54 in reading vocabulary this year, compared to 49 last year, and they scored 47 in reading comprehension, compared to 43 last year. In third grade students scored 62 in vocabulary this year, compared to 50 last year, and 68 in reading vocabulary, compared to 54 last year. In seventh grade students scored 62 in vocabulary this year, compared to 51 last year, and they scored 69 in reading comprehension compared to 53 last year.
There were some setbacks as well with fifth graders scoring 58 in vocabulary this year, compared with 67 last year, they also scored 65 in comprehension compared to 66 last year. However, for most grades in the elementary school reading scores were up this year, compared to last year.
