Resident Engineer Robert Moore said Tuesday that the Virginia Department of Transportation is “close” to making a decision on whether to close the popular roadside spring located on U.S. 211 about a mile east of Skyline Drive.
Mr. Moore said that he understands through conversations with several officials from the state Health Department that they feel that the only way public health can be guaranteed is to install some type of treatment system at the spring.
The water at the spring, according to health department officials, is contaminated with coliform bacteria, which indicates that the underground aquifer is being contaminated with groundwater somewhere above its outlet at the springbox.
