After several hours of wrangling over the possible implications of approval of the rezoning application submitted by The Inn at Little Washington, Washington’s Town Council postponed a vote on the proposal last week.
The application was forwarded to the council by its Planning Commission with a recommendation for denial, based largely on the inclusion of a parcel fronting on Gay St. which the Inn wants rezoned to commercial use.
The Inn’s counsel, David Dickey, suggested to the council that the applicants might be willing to amend the application to reduce the area of the commercial rezoning, leaving a strip two to five feet wide along the Gay St. lot line in residential zoning. That, Mr. Dickey explained, would prevent any commercial uses from ever gaining access to the property from the Gay St. side, while still allowing the Inn to use the bulk of the property.
After the Planning Commission hearing, suggestions where made that the town might look more favorably on the rezoning if it were reduced to include only the property fronting on Main St. by cutting the Sisk lot in half with the zoning line.
