Sharp sewer

bill stands By SHARON KILPATRICK Rappahannock News Staff Writer The Water and Sewer Authority dealt with a request from Alexander Sharp to lower the sewer bill for his apple packing business in Sperryville at the monthly meeting last Thursday. Mr. Sharp wrote, “We have ceased operation and the building is for sale.” He asked that the balance of $338 be eliminated from the WSA books. Mr. Sharp’s bill is based on four “equivalent of dwelling units.” All commercial establishments on the sewer system are charged for at least two EDU’s, except road-side stands which may petition to be reduced to one EDU if they are shut down for at least six months. Higher EDU rates are based on the number of employees working for the business.

“The minimum charge is two,” Carson Johnson said. “If he is not working his people, we can cut back to the minimum.” “He wants retroactive relief,” Jimmy Swindler said. “The operation continued while the bill was accumulating.”

The authority members voted that Mr. Sharp would owe the bill already accumulated, and that his rate would be cut to two EDU’s starting with May. If the business is closed for six months, Mr. Sharp can petition to have it reduced to one EDU. WSA mambers also did some preliminary work on the budget for next year. They decided to slightly increase amounts for telephone, electricity, and insurance and to add $200 for gasoline for the pumper truck. They will take final action on the budget at the June meeting. “Your expression is the most important thing you can wear.” Sid Ascher
