All the public washing of dirty laundry can only hurt GOP fund raising and organizational efforts and detract from the chances of Republican candidates in Virginia this fall. Yet there appears to be no end in sight to the bickering that now makes combat zones of many Republican gatherings.
General George Patton once said, in blunter terms, that certain waste materials don’t run uphill. That means problems and low morale at the top echelon of a political party will naturally flow downhill and affect the morale and thinking of the rank and file.
For now it appears that many of those with party leadership reponsiblities would rather fight each other than Demoncrats. They have lost sight of the basic goals of any political party, namely to elect its candidates and promulgate its philosophy.
This columnist is taking no sides in the internal warfare except to voice the opinion that if it continues the fortunes of all Republican candidates this year will be hurt in some way and GOP chances of taking control of the House of Delegates in 1991 will fade away.
Whether party chairman Huffman, who declines to bow out, has provided strong enough leadership to stop the cancerous battling is for Virginia Republicans to decide. He is an intelligent and gracious man. Yet defeat still remains an orphan and .there are Republicans in key rotes who believe Huffman should adopt the orphan and take it away with him.
Meanwhile, Democrats, who are beginning to feud publicly among themselves again, chortle each time they hear reports of Republicans aiming their sights at each other.
