Trying the other method also shows progress. This year’s fifth graders scored 58 in reading vocabulary. While that was not as high as last year’s fifth graders, who scored 67, it was five points higher than the 53 they scored in fourth grade, which was one point higher than the 52 they scored in third grade. In reading comprehension they scored 65 this year, compared to 51 in fourth grade and 52 in third grade. This method also reveals that the most dramatic improvements take place between when students are tested in March of their first grade year and March of their second grade year. This year’s second graders scored 73 in reading vocabulary, compared to 49 in first grade, and 68 in reading comprehension compared to 43 in first grade. However, very similar results occurred last year, when reading was not receiving as much attention. Last year’s second graders scored 63 in vocabulary compared to 53 in first grade, and 60 in comprehension compared to 48 in first grade.
