The chart shows the scores for all the tests given this March and compares those scores with tests given in March, 1989, and in March, 1988, for each of the schools and for the school division as a whole. Since only fourth graders at the elementary school are tested in science and social studies, and only eighth graders at the high school are tested in vocabulary, those scores are subject to random variation. Also in 1988 only the eighth and eleventh grades were tested at the high school so those scores are less representative of the school as a whole than the scores for 1989 and 1990.
All of the tests use a multiple choice format. The scores labelled “writing” summarize results in the first eight grades of separate tests on spelling, capitalization, punctuation and usage. In grades nine through twelve they are based on the students ability to pick the correct form from among various incorrect forms. The scores labelled “study skills” are based on the students’ ability to find information from maps, charts, and samples of reference works. The composite score is based on all the previous scores, except that in fourth and eighth grades it does not include science and social studies. *
