spending looms large in Smith’s definition of “Washington nonsense. ”
Foreign'aid and defense spending must be trimmed, in Smith’s view. “Everybody’s finally saying we need to be capful with defense spending,” Smith said to the crowd tha included most of Fauquier’s leading Democrats. “The way we’ve spent in the last eight years, soon we’ll find ourselves broke and unarmed.”
He cited three other main issues in the congressional campaign: education, highway money and mass transit. Federal highway funding “has already been appropriated,” Smith said. “Common sense says get the dollars already appropriated.”
Drugs are another issue, he said. “Instead of voting a pay raise, Congress should have been voting to put more money into our war on drugs . . ., a real war, not a war of words.”
In the brief interview later, he was asked what specific steps he would want congress to take in the drug war. “People feel a need for tighter control on our borders,” Smith responded.
He suggested using military force to stop the inflow of drugs. “We have had the largest peacetime military build-up in history. We might as well do something with it.”
Abortion could become a big issue, Smith believes, espcially if the media focus on it. Smith has taken an early stance that is quietly phrased but nontheless definite.
“People feel that government should stay out of private decisions,” Smith said. “I believe in the separation of church and state. Government has no business invading a woman’s privacy.”
The issue, he said, is in most minds “laid to rest. But if you look at how our congressman votes, that issue has not been laid to rest.”
