marized form shows that the improvement in reading scores at the elementary school has been accompanied by improvement in almost all other areas as well. Math showed a continued improvement from 62.7 last year to 66.6 this year. Only social studies showed a drop compared to last year, and that score is only based on tests of fourth graders.
The chart also shows that the strong showing at the elementary school is resulting in improvement for the division as a whole, even though most scores at the high school did not improve this year. However, there were improvements in the scores at the high school in writing, study skills, and science this year. Also in all areas except reading, scores at the high school, while not necessarily higher than 1989, are higher than those in 1988.
As pleased as Dr. Gangel is with the results at the elementary school, he is not satisfied. “What could be greater than this?” he asked. “We’re making a real difference in the lives of children.” But he is not ready to stop. He says he wants to get all the scores in the 70’s and keep on improving, and he believes he is in the ideal school system to do just that. “We’re the ideal size, we’ve got the students; we’ve got the staff, and we have tremendous community support.”
