What is an artist suggesting when he includes a crumbling Greek column in a portrait of an important person?
Chances are he’s using the fragments of ancient architecture to indicate that the sitter possesses the enduring and noble qualities of the early Greeks, according to Deborah Frazier of the Virginia Museum’s education and outreach staff.
That’s just one of the ways that fragments of the past, and fragments of the present for the matter, have been appropriated by the art world throughout history, Ms. Frazier says.
“Fragments” is the title of a Virginia Museum Artmobile exhibition coming to the Rappahannock County Elementary School on Thursday, May 17.
