After being closed more than a week, during which time recyclers either dumped their cans into the landfill or took them home, the recycling center at the landfill was reopened Monday.
Preston Coiner of Charlottesville has taken over the contract from Piedmont Recycling of Fredericksburg. Although Preston Coiner will offer expanded recycling, the county budget will probably have to subsidize the program, according to County Administrator John McCarthy.
The new recycling center replaces the old 55-gallon drums with a 20-yard roll-off container that has different bins for aluminum, tin cans, three different colors of glasq, milk-jug plastic and laundry-detergent-bottle plastic, said Mr. McCarthy.
