Underpaid
supervisors
To the Editor:
Recently I was astonished to learn that the members of our Board of Supervisors, the individuals who are elected to make decisions affecting the everyday lives of Rappahannock citizens, the officials who put together and administer a yearly budget of over $7.2 million, are compensated with the princely sum of about $35 per month/meeting, or roughly $400 per year.
I can only assume that most of my fellow citizens are unaware 6f this'situation and I would hope that upon becoming aware, their initial reaction would be one of disbelief, much as my own.
The average supervisor puts in hours every month in service to their county. In addition to their feeble monetary compensation, they are also entitled to the privilege of frequent interruptions in their personal lives from concerned citizens about various problems and situations in the county as well as the unsettling knowledge that with every vote on every issue they undoubtedly irritate or infuriate 20-50 percent of their constituents who probably have different opinions than their elected representatives on how to decide the multitude of issues the Board contends with on 2 monthly or even weekly basis.
