Eskimo Point was at the last fence first, but when Bay unleashed Blue Rocket after the right-hand turn toward home, he squeaked by Eskimo Point by a nose at the wire.
Best Northern was third by seven lengths and Last Mystic, Michael Traurig up, fourth.
“My leather broke about half-way up the stretch,” said Cockbum. “I was taken badly wide by Brooks Durkee, and I couldn’t stop to pull up because I had already started to make my run.
“He (Blue Rocket) just got down and did it. I sort of stood up on one iron; pulling up was more frightening than anything else.”
Palace Party, a horse owned by Mrs. P.F.N. Fanning, trained by Louis “Paddy” Neilson and ridden by Michael Traurig, won the second division of maiden timber.
The horse surged to the lead at the drop of the flag and never looked back, taking the race by countless lengths at the wire.
“We didn’t expect him to win. I was just hoping that he’d run well,” said trainer Neilson about the horse’s first start over timber.
The Irish-bred horse did two bumper and a hurdle race in Ireland but was uninspired over American hurdles, according to Neilson. “He was a useful kind of a horse,” he said, adding hi won on the flat when he came to the United States in 1989.
Traurig also won the five-eighths of a mile flat race aboard Joan Fernandes’ Little Red Badge.
Jockey Michael Traurig is the son of famous grandprix rider Bemie Traurig. “The boy rides better than his father,” boomed Neilson.
Paravon, with rider Barry Duncan, won the second division of the flat race after Twin Pockets, Hilary Thorpe up, was disqualified for clipping heels.
