teaches English to fifth graders. During writing workshop students write on any subject that interests them. They learn such skills as punctuation.
One measure of the success of the reading workshops will come later this month when all students take standardized tests on reading comprehension and vocabulary. The program can be judged a success if Mrs. Lee’s students do better than they could have been expected to do if they had been taught using the basal reading series.
But by another measure the program can already be judged a success. Mrs. Lee’s students report they enjoy reading class more this year than last. They say they enjoy reading more than they did before, and they report they are reading more.
