To the Editor:
It is unfortunate that it may seem both Unlikely and vaguely suspicious to do so, but I must depart from the lamentable tradition of government-journalist conflict in offering my thanks to Lou Hatter for the many services that he has provided to our community.
Mr. Hatter’s tenure as editor of the Rappahannock News during a period of great challenge for Rappahannock has been marked with both professional success for him personally (as witnessed by his promotion within the Arundel Newspapers organization), as well as fine service to the community, as may be attested to by anyone who has been a steady reader of the Rappahannock News or who is aware of Mr. Hatter’s many services as a rescue squad member and frequent volunteer for other worthy causes.
The journalist and the government official both serve the public trust, albeit in different ways. While I have been often challenged by the journalist in Mr. Hatter, I will attest to the fairness of those challenges. When I was in the wrong (rare though I wish that were), he made it known; when I was in the right, he likewise made it known. When, as is far more often the case, the rights and the wrongs are as murky as may be imagined, he cleared the air. I hope that my career will bear comparison with his in these regards, and will count myself most fortunate if I am as fondly remembered by the people I serve as he is by those he served.
