Jill Waterman, 16, won her first timber race when Worthy Key took the foxhunters’ timber race by countless lengths over Missy Monocacy and Leslie LeGore, the only horses left out of the original five-horse field.

Worthy Key galloped past the wire first at Casanova, but Waterman cut a flag so was disqualified.

“I felt pretty stupid (last week),” said the Foxcroft student, who ran in pony races for two or three seasons on the infamous pony, Little Fritz.

At Rappahannock, Worthy Key took the lead and never relinquished it. “I didn’t know what to expect (over timber), but I just let him do what he wanted,” said Waterman, who whipped off her horse all season with Piedmont.

“When we walked the course, I didn’t expect it to be that quick at all,” she added. “It goes by really fast."

Dr. Joe Rogers of Hamilton saw two of his horses enter the winners’ circle. Roses and Drums, who won last year’s open timber race at Orange County’s pointto-point but fell the next three times, won Rappahannock’s open timber race with ease over Exuberant Speed and Greg Ryan.

Winning jockey John Bosley said, “I thought he was getting tired going up (the hill), and then all of a sudden he got running again.”

Rogers’ horse jumped to the lead early on, never relinquishing that position in spite of Exuberant Speed’s attempts to catch him. It was Roses and Drums race by a good 12 lengths, with the rest of the field galloping in about two minutes later.

“We were just squeaking him around today,” said owner Dr. Rogers, adding that Roses and Drums had always been in front when he fell.

Cockbum was back in the tack when Rogers’ Blue Rocket won over maiden timber. Best Ndrthem and Brooks Durkee, who were second last week at Casanova, set the pace until they were joined by Eskimo Point and Donnie Yovanovich at the seventh fence.
