for children 1-3 years and 1,700 calories per day for children 4-6 years. This caloric intake is needed to provide energy for the growth process. Very active children or children large for their age may require extra calories daily.

Foods high in nutrients and low in calories are nutrient dense. Calorie-dense foods are high in calories but low in nutrients. Some foods are nutrient dense in their natural state, but ingredients added during food preparation add calories and lower their nutrient density.

For example, a plain baked potato is a nutrient-dense food. When that potato is fried in oil to make potato chips or French fries, it becomes calorie dense. Serve children nutrient-dense foods to prevent obesity and help those with a weight control problem.

Children thrive on regularity and routine in their daily activities. Try to serve meals at the same time each day.
