The supervisors also agreed that Mr. McCarthy should explore with a firm from Florida applying for a grant from the EPA to construct an artificial wetland at the landfill to filter leachate.
Mr. McCarthy said he and Jackson District representative Ellis Bingham had talked with the firm, which has been involved in creating such artificial wetlands mostly for sewer systems. The firm had suggested the main problem would be making the wetland small enough so it wouldn’t dry up because the landfill doesn’t produce much leachate.
Currently the county is supposed to pump the leachate and truck it to Warrenton to be put through the sewage treatment plant. The leachate has tested cleaner than the requirements for groundwater, Mr. McCarthy said. Pumping and transportation of the leachate is very expensive.
Mr. McCarthy said the Florida firm had suggested it would probably be necessary to divert storm water runoff and possibly streams on the property to insure enough water for a small wetland.
Col. Bingham also urged the supervisors to consider accepting
