appoint his successor until someone could be chosen in an election. The thought of that occuring would be enough to make Robb gag and stand fast.
One obvious Democratic choice might be former Gov. Gerald Balilies, though Wilder would not be likely to select him if presented with the opportunity. Wilder could even choose himself if he wanted, but that kind of move would surely doom him when general election time came.
On the Republican side, Col. Oliver North of Iran-Contra fame is already testing the waters for a run against Robb two years hence. Marshall Coleman and State Sen. Mark Earley are among others who might be interested.
When Robb was elected in 1988, everyone thought the Senate seat was his as long as he wanted it. Now that has dramatically changed. Should he survive through the present term, he would have rough going in 1994 should he manage to get renominated, since any Republican challenger would almost certainly make the character question the central issue.
