About 40 people came out for the first of a series of workshops on preventing drug abuse with State Trooper Gary Settle at the Washington Fire Hall Tuesday night.
The series sponsored by the Community Coalition Working for Healthy Youth (CCWHY) will continue with another workshop in July.
Trooper Settle brought with him a case of confiscated drugs and drug paraphenalia, including roach clips, small scales and various pipes. There was a display of several prescription pills and their illegal copies.
He said that crack cocaine use is increasing locally as is the use of LSD. “Let’s not be naive; drugs are here,” he said.
Trooper Settle defined drug abuse as “using natural or synthetic chemical substances for non-medical reasons.” He said drub abuse follows a pattern starting with experimental use, progressing to more frequent use, then to preoccupation with getting the drug, and finally to total dependency.
He suggested four steps to prevent drug abuse. “It begins with communication,” he said. Secondly he said parents should help their children develop a healthy self impage. He said parents should teach a strong system
