For my foods and nutrition column this week, I’d like to tell you about SHARE - a food-buying coop that has been in operation in Rappahannock County for almost 12 months, First, a little background information. . .SHARE stands for Self Help and Resource Exchange. It is a nationwide organization which began in 1983 in California by the Catholic Diocese.
Credit for getting our local SHARE organization started goes to Tommy Williams, Agricultural Extension Agent. As part of a Rural Leadership Development Program at Virginia Tech in which Mr. Williams participated last year, he toured the SHARE distribution warehouse in Giles County which serves southwestern Virginia counties. The purpose of the tour was to show an example of how communities respond to needs. . .in this case the need was for a more economical way to buy food. The community responded by joining the nationwide SHARE food-buying coop.
Mr. Williams shared this idea with our local Extension Advisory Committee which also thought it was a good idea. They felt it fulfilled a need locally not only to help families eat more economically but also
