middle-class people” to participate to keep the volume of participants high to enable SHARE to purchase in volume and, therefore, pass the savings along to us. Besides, I’ve never met anyone - no matter what their income level - who didn’t want to save money on their food bill.

How to participate

Participants pay $13 in cash or food stamps to sign up each month. They also get a form to record their two hours of community service to be done that month. If someone has a larger family, they can purchase two orders for $26 plus four hours of community service and so on.

Another idea for participation which we have not done yet, but which was done in Madison County by Hebron Lutheran Church, the host site there, is to ask people to make a charitable donation of $13 for one order of groceries that would be given to an individual in need identified by Department of Social Services. Hebron Lutheran Church collected over 20 donations this past Christmas to help families in need in Madison County.
