He is watching the Ross Perot campaign with interest. Sen. McCarthy tried to mount his own independent campaign for the presidency in 1976. “I said then there is a need to change the system and have more than two parties,” he noted.
Much of Sen. McCarthy’s campaign efforts in 1976 were devoted to court challenges to state regulations that made independent campaigns difficult. He said that since then, American politics has become “more frozen into a two-party format. The only way to challenge it now is to have an overwhelming issue or a lot of personal money.” He said he would “give Perot credit for being willing to spend his own money for the campaign.”
