“Before submitting a construction bid, a contractor knows that a specific number of training hours will be required,” says Mr. Brooking.
The contractor chooses both the job-training classification and the training program. It is submitted for approval to VDOT which coordinates the program.
Mr. Clanagan benefited not only for the training program, but from the proximity of his work to his home.
His home is off Fodderstack Road between Washington and Flint Hill. He lives there with his wife, Lillie, and their two daughters, Joyce and Brenda.
Construction work is a way of life that Mr. Clanagan enjoys. He says, “I’ve always done construction work, and I like what 1 do.”’
Before his layoff by a Northern Virginia contractor, Mr. Clanagan was commuting to Chantilly each day.
Now the distance to work is measured in minutes instead of hours.
New or current construction crew members may be enrolled in the craft, operative or construction office administration training programs, Mr. Brooking explained. Contractors are encouraged to seek ethnic minorities and females if they recruit personnel.
“The program is primarily aimed at persons not afforded earlier opportunities to receive job training," adds Mr. Brooking.
