Young love
When I was 10 years old I fell in love. Her name was Vivian.
Her parents had a farm about a mile away. They were immigrants from Denmark and did not speak good English. No one ever went to her house.
She never went to anyone else’s house, except maybe they went to George Andersen’s house because they came from Denmark too. George was my best friend for a while.
I remember when I fell in love with her. We were sitting on a bank beside the road with Laura and Olivia, two neighbor girls our age.
Later Laura told me that Vivian liked me. When I asked her how she knew she just said “because.” That was good enough for me, and I think that made it love.
After that my life was miserable. I thought Vivian was beautiful. She had high cheek bones and looked like Sopja Heine, also from Denmark. Someone must have told Vivian that 1 liked her, probably Laura, so from that day on she rejected me every chance that she got.
I had my big chance in the eighth grade, there was a box social. I think that the PTA raised money with these socials. I knew Vivian was bringing a box lunch which would be auctioned off, and the buyer got to eat the lunch with the girl that brought it.
