They collect data on how well their students are doing on standardized tests and their own measures of student achievement. They bring all of this information, some in summarized form, to a meeting with their principals, discuss the results and set a goal for the following year.
Stonewall-Hawthom District representative John Tole asked Dr. Gangel if they could consider also having students evaluate the teachers.
Dr. Gangel said he felt the same information would come from surveying parents. He said that under the old evaluation system principals made two classroom observations of tenured teachers a year. Under the self-evaluation system one such ob-t servation would be required every other year, but more could be scheduled. He said the new system would give principals more time for observing and working with new teachers.
Dr. Gangel told the board a consultant has estimated central airconditioning for the elementary school would cost $170,000. He said it would be possible to phase in airconditioning over a period of years, but he did not know how much that would add to the cost. Chairman Beverly Massie suggested that airconditioning be considered when the consultant is considering plans for expansion.
The board learned that Lewis Butler has placed first at the bus drivers’ rodeo and will represent the school system in statewide competition in Virginia Beach.
