Admitting he was a late convert. Wilder also said he named the panel in part because he was made when the legislature, due to intensive lobbying by the health care industry, defeated his proposal to tax health care providers.
W’hile Wilder has certainly not been kind to Republicans, he has probably spent more of his time feuding with members of his own party such as Robb, Gartlan, Moss and others. It is a strange sight to see a party that has won every statewide election for the past decade wrecked by such bloody infighting between its chosen leaders.
Wilder, whose style has always been confrontational, has certainly used his office to help even old scores with some Democratic leaders he feels slighted him while he was a State Senator and then lieutenant-governor — leaders who were always lukewarm at best about the idea of his becoming governor. And even with Robb in a free fall that may lead to his political demise, there are many Democrats anxious to carry on the fight which is good news for Republicans who have problems of their own.
