Amissville uses his rich voice to good effect as he tries to explain to Lennie what it means to be the subject of racial hostility. But Lennie is so retarded he can not understand the obvious: he and Crooks have both been badly mistreated by their fellow bindlestiffs.
From the mouse to Candy’s dog, to Curly’s hand, to Curly’s wife, the play drives forward, building in intensity and speed, until it crashes to a stop on the river bank where it began.
The opening night audience walked silently out of the high school last Friday to stand in the dark and breathe the crisp fresh air. The slience outside was a fitting tribute to the cast and to Howard Coon, trying his hand for the first time as a director. *
This is a powerful drama, part tragedy and part morality play. It is performed with great intensity by the cast and crew of the Rappahannock Players. Those who are fortunate enough to experience it will not soon forget George and Lennie, Slim and the others.
The play is probably not suitable for small children. They should not be asked to consider the frightful choice confronting George.
