1 he proposed addition at the elementary school would add 17 classrooms, up from 13 originally recommended by the consulting firm, with an estimated cost increase of $100,000, surely an underestimate. « Six additional spaces have been recommended for special programs leaving 32 regular classrooms, enough for four for each grade. At a time when incoming classes are requiring five sections, it is hard to believe the proposed addition will solve space problems very far into the future. 2 But the enlarged school will have a capacity of 800 students, hardly a small school. - The current elementary school would be more than adequate for fourth through seventh grades for many years. A primary school could be built for considerably less than a middle school. For example there would be no need for locker rooms with showers or a band room.
A new primary school would require the purchase of additional land, but the land could also provide for other county needs besides education. It would not eliminate the need for a future expansion for the high school. It would not be less expensive than an addition to the elementary school, but it would take care of elementary school space needs for a longer time and enable county children to continue attending small schools where they get more personal Attention. II The School Board has scheduled a public hearing on the plan to build the addition at the elementary school for Wednesday, Dec. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium.
It would be wonderful if a high percentage of the 2,600 people who voted to change the method of selecting School Board members would attend and express their views at this hearing.
