Game Warden Jim Bankston reported that the number of deer checked on opening day of the hunting season was average to below average. Complaints were down from last year, he said.
Mr. Bankston said there had only been one complaint of road hunting and one instance of someone trying to check a turkey. It was legal to shoot turkey last week, and it will again be legal next week, but this week turkey are out of season.
A brief survey of game checking stations found several reporting their activity to be about average for the opening days and one, Hillsdale Grocery, reporting above average numbers of deer checked.
In past years school has been closed for the opening day w ith teachers having a day of in-service. This year, because Labor Day was late and the start of school was late, in-service days were concentrated in the period before school started, and this Monday was a regular school day.
