Misguided expansion
There is no question that the space needs at the elementary school are critical now and likely to get more so in the future. ; Last week the School Board voted to proceed with plans for an addition to the school with the hope it will be ready by the 1994-95 school year.
When the elementary school was built it had 31 Classrooms for first through seventh graders, enough for four rooms for each grade, with an extra for two grades and $ room for special education. : Today there are 44 elementary teachers. Kindergarten classes were added. One classroom is shared by fifth and sixth graders when they are not in the computer lab. The teachers’ lounge has been divided into two remedial classrooms, and the teachers have been moved to what were two storage closets. Three additional classrooms have been divided for special education and remedial classes. Three trailor-like buildings in back of the school provide space for an additional four remedial and special education Classrooms and one for music. Guidance, speech therapy and psychological testing take place in former storage spaces.
