"Community education is when a community decides to better its quality of life,” Ms. Jewell-Kelly said. She said her organization you Id provide training for those interested in starting a local program. She said the concept of community education has expanded. “We’ve heeded to do a lot more. We ask, fWhat’s wrong with our community and what can we do?’” . Community education today is involved in everything from partnerships with business, to providing child care, bringing social services into the schools, parenting education, and drug and alcohol abuse prevention, she said. ; She suggested the group try to hire someone to survey the community to find out what people see as needs. “ Ms. Marshall said putting on a play is “creating a learning community.” She asked former teacher Ju-lia Boddie to tell about producing The Slabfoivv District Convention.
Mrs. Boddie said she got the idea pf doing the play to raise money for the scholarship fund in her name. "We want to bring people together lo help all our children,” she said, poting that the scholarship fund is ■used for children from the white as well as the black community.
