Sperryville's
bypass questioned
In your Wednesday, Nov. 11, greetings to your new readership, you spoke of the Sperryville by-pass as if it were a done deal.
Let me bring you up to date. Last winter, the VDOT presented the supervisors with a preliminary study for a by-pass. Our supervisor from Piedmont District, Charles K. (Pete) Estes, in turn presented it to the community for comment. According to Mr. Estes, the response was split 50/50 for and against. He therefore decided not to request further study. (Such a request would have been made at the VDOT’s annual conference in April).
This effectively ends the matter until such time as the people of Sperryville change their minds. I have been told by Mr. Robert Moore of the VDOT that if we don’t want the by-pass, VDOT doesn’t want it.
Your viewpoint seems quite different. I quote: “When the highway department was planning to bypass Washington, many residents opposed the plan. . . The highway department didn't listen and today the town is far more prosperous than before.”
In other words, VDOT knows best, and we should let them do whatever they wrant - it will all turn out for the best. Is this the personal opinion of the editor or the official position of the Rappahannock News'!
I also find questionable the argument (advanced chiefly, it seems by Washingtonians) that what was good for Washington will necessarily be good for Sperryville.
When you say that the by-pass will make Sperryville a “nicer” place, I take it you mean more like Washington. Certainly the ambience of the two villages is different. Which is “nicer” may not be as cut and dry as you think.
