lenges in teaching writing to 10th graders are convincing them that there is a connection between writing and technique and teaching them to totally let go of technique. “It’s hard to convince them that someone can teach them to improve their writing without violating their personalities,” she said, but added, “Journal writing has to be totally passionate and headlong."
In the concluding session Jim Thomasson tried to bring together the issues of a multi-disciplinary curriculum, testing and other ways to evaluate learning, and creating ethical students.
Several home schoolers expressed frustration with the standardized testing used to evaluate their work and also with having their children shut out from special programs available to public school students.
As part of the conclusion Pam Lynn, headmistress of Wakefield Country Day School in Huntly said, “Part of the problem is we have to teach kids to look for the long term goals over the short term goals, and that spills over into ethics. We have to change the way we look at learning and have to open it up to get more people in the community involved in the process.”
She says she frequently tells adults, “These students will be running the country you will be aging in.”
Meg Tuthill, who teaches at the Huntly school, said, “I’ve seen it all. I lived in a time you wouldn’t believe.”
She said she attended public schools in Pasadena, California, during the 30s. “The majority of the people were good. I never heard a swear word until I was in college...I would hope everybody could have had that experience, freedom from crime, freedom from fear. Everyone contributed to the community. It was an educational paradise, and it vanished.”
“I hope we can keep the environment in Rappahannock clean and crime free and make ethics the basis of education,” she continued. She said students will need to learn flexibility because of the changes in the job market. “They must learn to be good, learn to be tolerant and learn to love to learn forever.”
