from Virginia. Her race with Republican Henry Butler was the closest in the state - she won by about 9,000 votes - and also one in which there was the most name calling. The newly created 11th District appears to be one of the few remaining swing districts in the wake of redistricting and Republicans might have a shot at winning it in 1994 should a Clinton Administration falter.
The Harrisonburg to Roanoke 6th District was once rock-ribbed Republican until conservative Democrat Jim Olin claimed it 10 years ago. When he retired this year, Republicans saw an excellent chance to take it back and did as Robert Goodlatte, a Roanoke lawyer, won a landslide victory over his opponent Steve Musselwhite. Barring the unexpected, Republicans should be able to keep the seat a long time.
When the dust had settled, Democrats held a 7-4 advantage in the House of Representatives. All present incumbents, except possibly Byrne, are safe bets to continue in office and the best hope for further change on both sides will be that some of the incumbents decide to retire.
