A house belonging to Carole and Barry Lenardson in Castleton was destroyed by fire last Thursday.
Nobody was at home at the time of the fire, and no one was injured. The house was burnt to the ground by the time firefighters arrived. Capt. Jeff Brown of the Rappahannock County Sheriffs Office and Virginia State Trooper Sean Knick noticed the smoke from the fire and called it in. Firefighters from every company in Rappahannock responded. T
Sheriff John Henry Woodward was one of the firefighters with the Castleton Fire Department who arrived on the scene at 12:30 p.m. By then the house was gone, and the fire had spread into the woods behind the house site. It ended up burning 30 acres of underbrush in the forest, but the trees seem to have survived.
In all, said Sheriff Woodward, there must have been 35-40 firefighters there plus forest firefighters, two 3-man strike teams, and a helicopter to douse the flames from the forest. Some of the firefighters remained to fight the forest fire until 2 a.m.
The cause of the fire is unknown but is being investigated by the insurance investigator.
Ms. Lenardson is a manager at the I3leu Rock Inn.
Last week saw several other fires particularly in the Shenandoah National Park. t
